Nottoway
Nottoway Plantation was built ion 400 acres of highlands and 620 acres of swamp land. The plantation itself was built by Henry Howard completely out of Cypress trees. The house took a total of eight years to complete due to it's extensive detail and unique style.
Frieze
Nottoway was created by Henry Howard and 40 carpenters that were paid $40 a month. The unique styles of carpentry in the house is called plaster frieze. Frieze is a compound of mud, horse hair, clay and Spanish moss mixed together to create the beautiful designs seen throughout the house.
Chandeliers
Not only are these chandeliers beautiful, but they are also the original ones that were placed in the house when it was first built. These chandeliers are all gas powered since that was the original source of electricity during the time of the construction of this house.
Cannonball
During the Civil War the house was subjected to cannonballs from boats on the river. The cannonballs did not cause too much damage but were saved to show what the house went through and how it survived.
Bullets
Since the house was so close to the Mississippi River it witnessed a lot of battles and even had cannonballs as well as bullets ending up on their property.
